Joni Mitchell

Afscheid nemen, het brengt me in eerste instantie in een Franse sfeer. La melancholie, la tristesse, et un déjà vu...Ik associeer het verder met de Frans-Duitse Romy Schneider, dezer dagen weer op TV als Sisi, verder hebben we in dat genre : Jane Birkin en France Gall, Franswaase Hardy, Marianne Faithfull, Nico, Marie Laforêt en Carla Bruni...
'Déjà Vu' van Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Een beroemde 'plaat' uit beginjaren zeventig, met de hit 'Our House' . Graham Nash was uit de populaire Hollies gestapt, en 'verloofd' met Joni Mitchell. Zij kwam uit Canada, evenals Neil Young. (Canada heeft vanouds een Franse inslag.) Al die hippe lui kwamen op een kluitje in Californië terecht in die jaren rond '68!
Ik kocht de 'LP' Court and Spark van Joni, in 1973. Toen was haar verloving met  Graham Nash al beëindigd. De breuk werd door Joni beschreven in haar album Blue, met het nummer 'California'. Daarin zong ze over haar vlucht naar Parijs, weg van California en Graham. Joni was een maat te groot voor deze ex-Hollie, zo maakte ik onlangs op uit een documentaire met beelden uit die tijd.
Voor mijn gevoel staat Joni heel centraal , ze was overal 'bij' in die jaren tussen 1966 en 1975 van flower power tot de Black Panters. Ze trad op in Woodstock, toen de idylle wat ging kantelen. (Toen ook de Beatles afstand namen van de revolutie, in hun opzienbarende nummer 'Revolution'!) Vanaf 1975 was het afscheid nemen, we  gingen  richting Johnny Rotten c.s....
Misschien kwam dat ook wel tot uitdrukking in de titel van dat cruciale 'album' DÉJÀ VU. Niet echt een titel voor een pop-album! Pop was Engels, Amerikaans!
Maar laat ik verder niet de popjournalist of cultuurfilosoof  uit gaan hangen. Haar levensloop is na te lezen in o.a. Brian Hinton, 'Joni Mitchell, both sides now', London 1996. Terug naar een van haar eerste liedjes : 'urge for going':



 'Urge for going' is een positieve benadering van het thema 'afscheid'.
 De piepjonge Joni heeft dat hier al in de vingers, ze heeft zo jong als ze is al 'verstand' van afscheid nemen, lijkt het wel. En ook van 'haar eigen weg' gaan.
(Overigens, vergis je niet, zo idyllisch als ze oogt was haar leventje toen al niet, ik geloof dat er toen al een abortus was geweest, of ze had haar kind afgestaan, zoiets. "Little Green' op het album  'Blue' is er uit voortgekomen )
Ondanks al die gefascineerde tot smachtende kerels om haar heen, gaat dit nummer voor mij helemaal niet over 'relatieproblematiek'. Het is geen Frans chanson.Het heeft voor mij een Engels-Keltische sfeer. Het is een zonnig lied in de folktraditie. Het ademt de sfeer van Avalon:)
Ik vind het meer dan een liedje. Maar laat ik het niet proberen uit te leggen.
